These waters connect major Northeast marinas with Delaware River, Delaware Bay, Chesapeake & Delaware Canal (C&D Canal), Chesapeake Bay and southbound East Coast delivery routes.
Routes may continue through Delaware Bay and the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal to Chesapeake Bay, Annapolis, Baltimore and the Potomac River, including access to Washington, DC. Farther south, deliveries may include Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Great Bridge Lock, the Dismal Swamp Canal, and connections to the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (ICW).
Mid-Atlantic Yacht Delivery Route Planning
Every Mid-Atlantic yacht delivery is planned around the vessel, weather, tides, currents, fuel range and the safest practical route. Depending on the origin and destination, routing may include New York Harbor, the Jersey Shore, Cape May, Delaware Bay, the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal, Chesapeake Bay, Hampton Roads and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Offshore passages may be used when conditions are favorable, while protected-water routes — or a combination of both — may be preferred when weather, vessel range or scheduling make them the better option. Marina availability, fuel stops, bridge and lock timing, daylight and seasonal conditions are considered throughout the trip. Atlantic Yacht Delivery handles both northbound and southbound vessel relocations through the Mid-Atlantic, connecting New England and New York with New Jersey, Delaware, the Chesapeake, Virginia, the Carolinas and Florida.
Owner Support, Vessel Preparation & Delivery Logistics
Before departure, Atlantic Yacht Delivery works with the owner to review vessel readiness, fuel range, navigation electronics, safety equipment, dockage, crew requirements and pickup and delivery logistics. Mid-Atlantic deliveries may also require planning around inlet conditions, tides, bridge openings, locks, marina availability, fuel stops and changing weather along the New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Chesapeake and Virginia coasts. Clear communication before and during the trip helps keep the delivery organized while allowing the route and schedule to adjust to conditions and the needs of the vessel.
Recent Mid-Atlantic Yacht Deliveries
52' Ocean Yacht — Kent Narrows, MD → Forked River, NJ
The delivery began at Kent Narrows on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and ran north through the Chesapeake Bay, passing the Kent Island area and continuing toward the upper Bay, the Elk River and Chesapeake City. From there, we entered the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal and continued east through the C&D Canal to Reedy Point and the Delaware River.

The route then turned south through the Delaware River and the full length of Delaware Bay toward Cape May. After rounding Cape May, we continued north along the New Jersey coast past Wildwood, Sea Isle City, Ocean City, Atlantic City and the central Jersey shoreline before reaching Barnegat Inlet.

After entering Barnegat Inlet, the final leg crossed into Barnegat Bay and continued north through the protected waters of the bay to Forked River. The trip connected the Chesapeake Bay, C&D Canal, Delaware River and Delaware Bay, the open Atlantic and Barnegat Bay in a single Mid-Atlantic delivery.
46' Viking Princess — Brielle, NJ → Washington, DC
This delivery departed Hoffman’s Marina on the Manasquan River in Brielle, New Jersey. After exiting Manasquan Inlet, we ran south along the Jersey Shore past Barnegat, Atlantic City and the South Jersey coast to Cape May before turning north into Delaware Bay.

From Cape May, the route continued up Delaware Bay and the Delaware River to the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal. We passed through the C&D Canal at Chesapeake City and entered the upper Chesapeake Bay, then turned south for the run down the Bay past Annapolis and toward Point Lookout at the mouth of the Potomac River.

Once on the Potomac, the route continued upriver toward Washington, DC. During the passage we had to account for active testing at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, where portions of the Potomac River Test Range can be restricted during weapons testing. That required additional attention to range activity and routing before continuing north.

The final leg up the Potomac provided a completely different kind of delivery experience, passing historic landmarks and the Washington waterfront before completing the trip in the nation’s capital. The route combined open-ocean running along the Jersey coast with Delaware Bay, the C&D Canal, Chesapeake Bay, the Potomac River and the added planning required around an active military test range.
41' Sea Ray Sundancer — Neshaminy State Park, PA → Brick, NJ
This delivery began at Neshaminy State Park on the Delaware River in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. From there, we headed south past Bristol and continued downriver through the Philadelphia waterfront, past the Navy Yard, Chester and Marcus Hook, beneath the Delaware Memorial Bridge and toward Delaware City at the entrance to the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal.

During the Delaware River portion of the trip, we developed a problem with the port engine thermostat. The engine could only be operated safely at very low RPM, significantly reducing our speed and changing the day’s original plan. Rather than push farther into Delaware Bay with a mechanical issue, we stopped at Delaware City.

Once underway again, the delivery continued south through the Delaware River and Delaware Bay toward Cape May, where we made another stop before beginning the coastal portion of the trip. From Cape May, we rounded the southern tip of New Jersey and headed north along the Atlantic coast past Wildwood, Ocean City and Atlantic City toward Barnegat Inlet.
After entering Barnegat Inlet, we crossed into Barnegat Bay and continued north through New Jersey’s protected coastal waterways. The route carried us beneath the Route 37 bridges at Seaside Heights, north through the bay and under the Mantoloking Bridge before turning west into the Metedeconk River.

The final leg took us well up the Metedeconk to the Sea Ray’s new home in Brick, New Jersey.
This delivery was a good example of the varied navigation involved in Mid-Atlantic yacht delivery. In a single trip we dealt with the Delaware River, Delaware Bay, an unexpected engine problem, the open Atlantic off the New Jersey coast, Barnegat Inlet, Barnegat Bay and the more confined waters of the Metedeconk River. It also demonstrated why a delivery plan has to remain flexible when mechanical problems, travel time and changing waterways affect the original schedule.
